Elisha Matambo, Copperbelt Minister, has warned against indiscriminate cutting of trees for charcoal burning as this contributes to many climate challenges the world is facing.
Matambo said this on Tuesday in Ndola at Chichele forest where he officiated at a tree planting exercise organized by forestry department.
He said forests guarantee Zambia’s essential water supply which plays fundamental role in regulating rainfall and streams for agricultural purposes.
“When it comes to issues of climate change the new dawn government is committed and the government has created a specific ministry dealing in climate and global warming, “he said.
Ndola district commissioner Joseph Phiri hailed the tree planting exercise organized by the forestry department and other stakeholders.
He said the tree planting exercise must continue in the Copperbelt and Zambia at large as the rest of the world grapples with global warming.
The tree planting field day was held under the theme “Plant a Tree to Serve the Earth.”
Matambo was accompanied by Phiri, Ndola Mayor, Jones Kalyati and several government officials.
