In sharp contrast to the mood that gripped football fans when Chipolopolo lost to Malawi at the COSAFA, barely 48 hours later, the outcome of the Copper Queens-Germany affair has had a far more happier ending.
The women’s national team edged the world’s second ranked team Germany 3-2 in dramatic fashion courtesy of a Barbra Banda brace and a Racheal Kundananji strike, to the delight of football fans.

Two goals in quick succession from Germany to level the score in the controversial 10 minutes additional time, were not enough to stop the social media frenzy that erupted when Banda lobbed the second best ranked team’s goalkeeper, to swing the pendulum in favour of Zambia once again.
Lea Schüller and Alexandra Popp’s looked like they did enough to salvage a draw but Banda had the last laugh, upsetting the two time World Cup champions at home after a vicious counter attack.
Fans took to social media expressing happiness with the result in the match played at the Sportpark Ronhof | Thomas Sommer Stadium in Fürth, Germany.
However, other fans expressed concern with the defensive qualities of the Bruce Mwape tutored squad.
“Thank you shepolopolo. You have made us proud. However, let us work on some of our defenders and goalkeeping skills. Free headers every time😢😢😢,” posted an account identified as Simon Cheba on the comments section of official FAZ page’s match result announcement.
In the midst of hundreds of congratulatory messages, some fans were concerned with the officiating, questioning the controversial 10 minutes additional time at the end of the 90.
“All we need now is to have it in our minds that the officiating we have seen in the friendlies especially this Germany one, is what will be at the tournament and we should just be going out to score against our opponents including the referees, otherwise this referee is the funniest I have ever seen 😏😏😎.
All the best Copper Queens 🙏🙏🤲,” posted another fan Friday Siwale.
The Copper Queens victory over Germany marked the end of the European preparatory tour ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup slated for Australia and New Zealand.
Zambia lost to Ireland 3-2 on 22 June and went on to draw 3-all against Switzerland eight days later during the tour of Europe.
The FIFA Women’s World Cup will start on July 27th.
