Manchester United has terminated the contract of Erik ten Hag following a disappointing start to the 2024/2025 Premier League season, marking a significant managerial shift for the club as it grapples with internal transitions and underwhelming league performance.

The decision comes after a challenging run for the 20-time English champions, who have struggled to secure points in the early stages of the season.

In an official statement on the club’s website, Manchester United confirmed Ten Hag’s departure, extending gratitude for his contributions over the past two years.

“We are grateful to Ten Hag for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future,” the club stated.

Ten Hag’s final match was a 2-1 defeat to West Ham United on Sunday, which saw Manchester United fall to 14th place in the Premier League standings, with just three wins in their first nine games.

The poor start to the season was reportedly a factor in the decision to dismiss him, as club leadership seeks to stabilise the team’s performance and chart a path back toward contention.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, a former Manchester United striker and fan favorite, has been appointed as interim head coach.

He will work closely with the current coaching staff as the club initiates a search for a permanent manager.

Van Nistelrooy’s interim role was expected to bring familiarity and renewed energy to the squad, given his history with the club and leadership experience as a coach.

Ten Hag was appointed in April 2022, arriving from Ajax with a vision to rebuild Manchester United’s identity on and off the field.

He led the club to two domestic trophies, capturing the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.

Despite these successes, the team struggled to achieve consistency in the Premier League and Europe, facing criticism for tactical decisions and roster management.

As Manchester United moves forward under Van Nistelrooy’s guidance, fans and analysts are eager to see how the team adapts to the interim setup and prepares for future leadership.
