A clergyman has called for an end to the divisive culture of insulting former Presidents in Zambia and urged the nation to embrace respect for both serving and former leaders, fostering unity.

In his remarks, Hammitone Mulendema, a retired Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) pastor, advised political leaders to respect each other and emphasized that both former President Edgar Lungu and his successor, President Hakainde Hichilema, deserve respect from the public.

Mulendema, in expressing concern, pointed out the special case of former lPresident Lungu, who he said was being unfairly insulted and humiliated by young people without restraint.

“We are living in evil times, where elders and Presidents are not respected. Insults and profane language are being used without consequence,” Mulendema said.

He urged for a return to decency and maturity in politics, lamenting the tendency to blame the President for every weather event, from heat to droughts and floods.

“When shall we grow and mature in the manner we do politics?” he questioned.

In a separate statement, President Hakainde Hichilema, who was among the hundreds of Zambians paying their respects to the late Professor Benjamin Mweene, described the academician’s death as a great loss to the nation.

“Prof is gone, but he motivated us, and he will continue to motivate. He worked very hard, a rare attribute of intellect and diligence,” Hichilema said.

He also encouraged the nation to emulate the hard work exemplified by figures like Professor Mweene, stressing the importance of valuing hard workers in society.
