The Livingstone Magistrate Court has convicted and sentenced a Kazungula customs clearing agents to two years imprisonment with hard labour.

Morten Moono aged 33, was convicted today December 12, 2022 for the offence of forgery contrary to section 347 of the penal code chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia and altering a false document namely a bridge toll fee receipt.

This is contrary to section 352 of the penal code chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia, according to Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) acting corporate communications manager Oliver Nzala in a statement issued on Monday, December 12, 2022.

Facts of the case are that on December 3, 2022 in Kazungula, Morten Moono forged a Zambia Revenue Authority Kazungula bridge toll fee receipt, date December 3, 2022 by purporting to show that it was genuinely issued by ZRA when in fact not.

The forged document was presented to Zambia Revenue Authority Customs officers to show that a truck had paid bridge toll fee amounting to US$ 85 to enable it cross into Zambia when in fact not.

Upon scrutinising the bridge toll receipt, customs officers noticed that it was not genuine and reported the convict to ZRA security.

Nzala warned members of the public that the ZRA would not hesitate to prosecute anyone found forging bridge toll receipts and other documents.

Through such criminal activities, Nzala said the Government was losing revenue which was supposed to be used in the provision of various socio-economic services and other developmental projects to the public.

The sentence takes effect from 6th December 2022.
