The Zambian government has issued an urgent call for action as the country grapples with a Cholera outbreak in Nakonde, Muchinga Province and a confirmed third Mpox case in Lusaka.
Acting Minister of Health Douglas Syakalima said so far, Zambia had recorded 13 Cholera cases in Nakonde, with two patients discharged and 11 remaining in stable condition
During a media briefing in Lusaka on Monday, Syakalima said the government was working closely with local and international stakeholders, including the Ministries of Local Government and Water Development, to ensure a targeted response.
The Minister urged citizens to treat water by boiling or chlorinating, practice hand hygiene and seek medical care immediately for any signs of diarrhea.
He stated that health teams were distributing chlorine and conducting disinfection in affected communities and public places, including markets and transportation hubs, were required to enforce sanitation measures.
“Government has mobilized 2 million cholera vaccines and is reallocating 197,000 doses to Nakonde. Preparations for vaccinations in high-risk areas are underway,” Syakalima highlighted
The Minister called for compassion and understanding to combat stigma, which often discourages individuals from seeking timely treatment.
Meanwhile, on the Mpox outbreak, a second confirmed case of the husband of the initial 34-year-old female patient and both individuals were stable and under home isolation.

“Health authorities are monitoring eight close contacts, with no additional symptoms reported so far. Avoid close contact with symptomatic individuals or contaminated materials,” Syakalima advised.
He reiterated the importance of clean water, hygiene and early care in combating cholera, emphasizing President Hakainde Hichilema’s leadership as the Global Cholera Champion.
Syakalima stressed the need for sustainable investments in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) to prevent future outbreaks.
“Government remains resolute in its efforts to protect public health. With robust measures in place and community cooperation, Zambia aims to overcome these health challenges and emerge stronger and more resilient,” he said.
