The Chisamba Town Council has expressed concern at the indiscriminate waste disposal by marketeers at the Central Business District (CBD) which has created illegal dumpsites in the district.
The unlawful disposal of unwanted waste has become a severe challenge to public health and environmental safety in the community and must come to an end.
This is according to the Council Public Relations Officer, Nakubiana Shabongo in a statement issued on Saturday.
“We would like to express concern over the growing trend of indiscriminate waste disposal in Chisamba. We have two refuse bays in the CBD and one is just next to the market so it is worrisome to see waste being dumped next to the authorised point of disposal.”
“We are mandated with the responsibility to prevent and control the outbreak of diseases by ensuring the surroundings are clean as outlined in the Public Health Act CAP 295,” Shabongo said.
She reiterated that dumping of any waste material in undesignated places was an offence and any person found wanting risked being arrested and prosecuted.
She therefore sent a warning to all those involved in illegal dumping of waste to desist from such action to avoid being prosecuted under appropriate laws pertaining to illegal dumping.
The council has embarked on a vigorous sensitization programme highlighting pieces of legislation associated with public health and safety and the dangers of poor waste management to the general public.
“The Council established two refuse bays in the CBD and wonders why people trading in that area have continued to engage in unlawful disposal of waste.
“It is our aim as a local authority to engage communities in the war against illegal disposal of waste as it has detrimental effects,” Shabongo said.
