Chipolopolo midfielder, Kalaba, retires; set to join TP Mazembe technical crew

Former Chipolopolo midfielder and Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champion Rainford Kalaba has retired from active football.

Kalaba who plays for TP Mazembe last night confirmed his retirement via his official Facebook page.

The midfielder who is passionately called Master by football enthusiasts announced that he is joining the technical team at TP Mazembe after 13 years of service at the Congolese club.

“After 13 years at TP Mazembe today I hang my boots! It is my gratitude and honour to be part of the Mazembe family on my playing days, I’ll never forget the good times I had on the pitch in the TP jersey and captain the team once in my soccer career. I am sad to announce my retirement to all my fans around the world it hasn’t been an easy journey for me I’ll applaud my efforts and dedication I gave through my life. I am glad that I will continue working with the TP Mazembe Technical Team. Let’s see what this new Journey has to offer,” the post read in part.

TP Mazembe has thanked the player for 13 years of unwavering service.

The club also confirmed that Kalaba will be joining them in a technical role following his retirement.

“Rainford Kalaba won’t continue with the Ravens. After thirteen years of being one of the offensive pillars of TPM, the Zambian international will take leave from Badiangwenas Temple audience as a player but will definitely return with a technical role in time to graduate,” a post from the club’s official Facebook page read.

Chipolopolo midfielder, Emmanuel Banda, was among people that wished Kalaba well in his future endeavors.

“Enjoy your retirement Master and all the best in your new adventures that will come forth,” the comment read.

Golden Party leader, Jackson Silavwe, thanked the AFCON winner for his services on the pitch.

“Thank you very much for your service Champ. We are proud of you,” Silavwe posted.

A host of Facebook users congratulated him and wished him well for the future.

An account identified as Margaret T. Zulu described him as the best while another Facebook user Daniel Kabeleka wrote: “Thank you for the dedication to mother Zambia and the memories. All the best ba Mupa.”
