A Chinese national identified as Yang Tahan has fled Zambia, while three others have been arrested in connection with a shooting incident that occurred on December 12, 2024, at Sun City and Zambezi Mall in Lusaka, leaving two Chinese nationals injured.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, confirmed that Yang Tahan is believed to have escaped to Tanzania en route to China after the incident.

Hamoonga disclosed that on December 14, 2024, Heming Yang, 41, was summoned for questioning and revealed that he had handed over his pistol, a Beretta, to Yang Tahan on the night of the incident.

Yang reportedly fired three shots into the air, causing terror and panic before fleeing.

“Heming Yang has since been charged and arrested for failing to secure a firearm contrary to Section 38(3) of the Firearms Act, Chapter 110 of the Laws of Zambia. He remains in custody at Chelston Police Station,” Hamoonga stated.

On December 15, Chen Feng, 36, was also questioned after responding to a distress call from his brother, Can Chen, who reported being attacked by armed Chinese nationals at Zambezi Mall.

In his defense, Chen used a Taurus pistol to shoot one of the attackers, Yang Houcai.

Chen has been charged and arrested for Acts Intended to Cause Grievous Harm contrary to Section 224 of the Penal Code Act. His firearm was seized for further investigations.
