Maina Soko Medical Centre Commandant, Brigadier General Levy Muchemwa, has commended the 27th Chinese Military Medical Team for their contributions to Zambia’s healthcare sector, emphasizing their role in mentoring local medical personnel and improving standards.

The team, which operated in Zambia from March 2024 to February 2025, collaborated with Zambian counterparts to perform critical procedures such as open-brain craniotomy, tumor surgeries, hip replacements, and abdominal surgeries.

Comprising specialists including a cardiologist, gastroenterologist, ENT professor, neurosurgeon, orthopedic surgeon, general surgeon, intensive care specialist, anesthesiologist, dialysis specialist, ICU nurse, and a chef who embraced local culture, the team spent a year at Maina Soko Medical Centre.

Speaking at a farewell parade at Arakan Barracks Banquet Hall in Lusaka on Friday night, Muchemwa praised the team’s dedication.

“For six decades, Chinese medical teams have stood by us, healing our people and sharing their knowledge. The 27th team has strengthened this legacy with remarkable expertise and selfless service. We deeply appreciate this friendship and look forward to even greater collaboration,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chinese Embassy Chargé d’Affaire, Wang Shengi, reaffirmed China’s commitment to military medical cooperation, noting that 332 Chinese military doctors have served in Zambia since 1984.

“Their noble ethics and skills have strengthened our partnership,” Wang said.

Team Leader Colonel Wang Xiao reflected on the team’s experiences, highlighting the lives saved and the bonds forged.

“We completed complex surgeries and saved countless lives. What fills me with pride is the unbreakable bonds formed with our Zambian colleagues,” he said.
