Chief whip, Mulusa, drags opposition parties, alleges propaganda, desperation to return to power

Government Parliamentary Chief Whip, Starford Mulusa, has raised concern over what he described as a misinformation campaign by some opposition politicians attempting to regain political relevance.

“We have observed with concern that some opposition figures, in a desperate attempt to salvage their dying political careers, have mounted a campaign based on disinformation and misinformation against the government,” he said.

Speaking at a media briefing at Parliament Building on Monday, Mulusa urged media houses to fact-check statements from politicians and ensure accuracy in reporting to protect democracy.

“News organizations that engage in public fact-checking play a crucial role in protecting both the public and our democracy from misleading narratives,” he stated.

Meanwhile, he called on newly elected and returning Members of Parliament (MPs) to put national interest above partisan or personal gain as they prepare for the resumption of parliamentary duties.

The Fourth Session of the Thirteenth National Assembly, which adjourned sine die on December 6, 2024, is set to reconvene on Tuesday.

Mulusa emphasised the significance of the upcoming session, which would focus on legislative matters, including the passage of key bills.

“As newly elected Members take their seats, they must always remember their duty to the electorate who sent them to Parliament to represent their interests,” he said.

He urged MPs to conduct themselves with dignity, respect, and integrity, actively participating in debates, proposing legislation, and engaging their communities while maintaining parliamentary decorum.

Mulusa also called on the media to provide accurate coverage of parliamentary proceedings to ensure the public remains well-informed.
