Zambians have been encouraged not to politicise the drought spell being experienced in the country by Paramount Chief Mpezeni of the Ngoni people in Chipata.
The Chief said that it was reasonable that all Zambians worked with government so that solutions could be provided to ensure food security.
Paramount Chief Mpezeni was speaking when President Hakainde Hichilema paid a courtesy call on him at his Laweni Palace last Saturday.
“This should be the time Zambians worked together so that the looming agriculture disaster can be addressed for the betterment of the people,” he said.
Paramount Chief Mpezeni said it was not the time to point fingers at each other but put hands together.
He, however, said he would work with the government of the day to deliver development to the people.
President Hichilema on his part harped on need to invest in irrigation to address the challenges that came with drought.
He noted that irrigation would be the best way to mitigate the challenges of rain-fed agriculture.
“As government, we are of the view that investing in irrigation will reduce the pressure placed on rain fed agriculture. So, Zambians need to look into this issue seriously so that the challenges we are facing can come to an end,” Hichilema said.
