NAIROBI – Nairobi Archbishop, Philip Anyolo, has declined President William Ruto’s and other politicians’ donations to the Soweto Catholic Church.
In a statement on Monday, November 18, Anyolo cited the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) directives that discourage political donations to churches and the use of church events for political self-promotion.
“The catholic church strongly discourages the use of church events such as fundraisers and gatherings as platforms for political self-promotion.
“Politicians are urged to refrain from turning the pulpit into a stage for political rhetoric, as such actions undermine the sanctity of worship places,” Anyolo said.
Tuko news reported that according to Anyolo, the church was required to decline contributions from politicians, which might compromise its independence.
Further, the Nairobi archbishop stated that political leaders should strive to act on fundamental issues raised by KCCB, including ending corruption and dealing with unfulfilled promises.
“The church is called to uphold integrity by refusing contributions that may inadvertently compromise its independence or facilitate unjust enrichment.
“Political leaders are urged to demonstrate ethical leadership by addressing the pressing issues raised by the KCCB, including political wrangles, corruption, politics of self-interest, culture of lies, unfulfilled promises and misplaced priorities,” he added.
Anyolo stated that in adherence to the Public Fundraising Appeals Bill 2024 under section 10(2), people intending to raise funds through fundraising must apply for a permit.
In line with the directives, the Nairobi Archdiocese said it had decided to refund donations of KSh 200,000 from Governor Johnson Sakaja and KSh 2.6 million from President Ruto.
Anyolo, further stated that the church would not accept the pledge made by the president of KSh 3 million and a parish bus “Consequently, the donations made to Soweto Catholic Church on Sunday, November 17, are in violation of these directives and the law.
These included the Governor of Nairobi’s donation of KSh of 200,000 to the parish choir and Parish Missionary Council (PMC), the president’s donation of KSh 600,000 to the choir and PMC and KSh 2 million for the construction of the father’s house.
“These funds will be refunded to the respective donors. Furthermore, the promised additional KsH 3 million for the construction of the father’s house, as well as the donation of a parish bus by the president are hereby declined,” the statement added.
