Cabinet has approved Zambia’s ratification of the Lobito Corridor Transit Transport Facilitation Agency (LCTTFA) Agreement.
The Lobito Corridor Transit Transportation Facilitation Agency was adopted and signed on January 27, 2023 by the Council of Ministers responsible for Transport in the Contracting Parties in Lobito, Angola.
Information and Media Minister, Chushi Kasanda, in a statement issued in Lusaka on Sunday said the decision was made during the 11th Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday chaired by President Hakainde Hichilema.
Kasanda said the Lobito Corridor represents an alternative strategic outlet to export markets for Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and offers the shortest route linking key mining regions in the two countries to the sea.
“The Corridor connects the Copperbelt and North-Western Provinces which according to studies host 20 percent of the country’s population and generate 55 percent of its exports,” she said
Kasanda said in DRC, the Corridor connects the mining provinces of Tanganyika, Haut-Lomami, Lualaba and Haut-Katanga and offered a potential conduit to overseas markets.
“The agreement is not yet in force as currently, all the three contracting states of Angola, DRC and Zambia are still in the process of ratifying it,” she said.
