Cabinet has approved the roadmap for a research study on the Luapula-Kafue Water Transfer Project and the formulation of a Comprehensive Water Development Plan for the Kafue Catchment.
The study followed an agreement between Zambia and PowerChina, under which the two parties will collaborate on water security interventions to enhance national resilience against climate change, according to Chief Government Spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa.
“This will improve water availability in the Kafue Catchment, which is the backbone of Zambia’s economy, supporting hydroelectric power, domestic and industrial water supply, irrigation, fishing, and livestock farming,” Mweetwa said.

Cabinet also approved a three-year roadmap for the design, construction, and rehabilitation of dams to improve water harvesting infrastructure nationwide.
Mweetwa said the initiative aimed to mitigate the impact of recurring droughts by enhancing water, energy, and food security.
“The construction and rehabilitation of multipurpose dams will strengthen Zambia’s climate resilience and expand access to water for domestic, agricultural, and commercial use,” he added.
The approvals were made during the 2nd Cabinet Meeting of 2025, chaired by President Hakainde Hichilema at State House on January 30.
