The Leadership Movement party has proposed the removal of a clause which requires for fresh filing of nominations once a candidate pulls out of a by-election.
Party Secretary-General, Jairos Ngoma, stated that the filing of fresh nominations was not only costly to the treasury through the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) but to the other candidates contesting in the by-election
Ngoma made the proposal during the weekily media briefing at the Party Secretariat in Lusaka on Saturday.
The Leadership Movement Party Secretary-General also commended the ECZ for going ahead with the Mayembe Ward by-election after its party candidate pulled out of the race.
“You the ‘New Dawn’ can you set your priorities right and stop these by-elections as they are costly and wasting the country’s time to develop,” he advised.
Ngoma reiterated his accusation that the ruling United Party for National Development was triggering elections in the country in order to have more numbers at ward level.
“We were in Mwandi, Nsama, now Shiwang’andu, is this the way the UPND are going to govern this country especially that there are a lot of areas which need the same resources,” he stated.
Ngoma also accused the government of misplaced priorities in the manner it was governing the country and had continued to stifle the democratic space.
