Businesswoman sentenced to five years for scorching daughter with hot brazier

A 32-year-old businesswoman from Old Kanyama Compound has been sentenced to five years in prison for scorching her 10-year-old daughter with a hot brazier.

The brutal punishment was meted out after the mother, Alice Mweene, accused her daughter, of stealing money.

According to the facts presented in court, on April 12, 2024, at around 16:00 hours, the girl returned home from school, only to be confronted by her mother.

Mweene demanded to know if Beauty had taken money from the pot, but the young girl denied the allegations.

Enraged, Mweene grabbed a cooking stick and beat her daughter mercilessly.

In a twisted and disturbing turn of events, Mweene then instructed her sister to bring fire, intending to inflict even more severe punishment on the minor .

However, when her sister informed her that the landlord was using the brazier, Mweene took her daughter to a neighbour’s house, where she found another brazier.

Removing the pot from the brazier, Mweene callously placed the girl on the scorching hot surface, causing severe burns to the child’s buttocks.

Luckily, neighbous intervened, rescuing the child from her mother’s cruel clutches and reporting the incident to the Kanyama police.

Lusaka Magistrate Amy Masoja handed down the five-year simple imprisonment sentence, condemning Mweene’s actions as unacceptable and inexcusable.
