Bus driver kills pedestrian, injures two others

Police in Mutendere have arrested a bus driver for dangerous driving which killed one pedestrian and seriously injured two others.

Police Public Relations Officer, Rae Hamoonga, identified the suspect as Dickson Mwensu, 47, of Kabangwe a driver of a Marcopolo bus registration number GRZ 653 BV.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday, Hamoonga said the pedestrian was identified as a male juvenile, Raymond Mulenga, 14, of Mutendere Compound who sustained fatal head injuries and died on the spot.

“Dominic Mvula aged 23 of Mutendere compound and a male juvenile aged 17 of Mutendere compound who both sustained serious injuries and have been admitted to Levy Mwanawansa Hospital,” he added.

Further more, Hamoonga said the vehicle had its front windscreen shattered and front side of the bumper damaged.

“The incident occurred on February 21, 2024 around 07:10 hours along Alick Nkata Road near the traffic lights of Kudu Junction,” he said.

He explained that the accident reportedly occurred when Mwensu’s motor vehicle, approaching from the east to west direction, experienced a brake failure which resulted in the driver hitting the deceased and the other two injured person who were walking off the road.

“The body of the deceased has since been deposited in University Teaching Hospital Mortuary,” Hamoonga said.

He added that Investigations were ongoing and that the vehicle would be subjected for re-examination at the Road Transport and Safety Agency to ascertain the causation.
