Five bodies of illegal miners have reportedly been retrieved from the Green Mountain in Kitwe, where they perished while scavenging for copper, according to a police report.
“Kitwe Central Police Station has received a report of a mine accident which occurred today (Saturday) at around 14:30 hours at Green Mountain TD52,” stated Peacewell Mweemba,Coppedrbelt Police Chief.
The five miners were said to be working at the tailing dam when it collapsed, covering them with soil.

“According to Mweemba, so far the five bodies had been retrieved,” he added, saying “The situation currently is calm.”
Police officers transported the bodies to the Kitwe Teaching Hospital mortuary.
Mweemba said that a detailed report would follow soon.
