Zambia Police have confirmed a reported incident of an illegal miner buried alive after a rockfall in Chingola’s Sensele notorious pit that saw more than 30 miners trapped 24 days ago.
Copperbelt Police Commissioner, Peacewell Mweemba, said in a statement issued on Sunday that an illegal miner, aged 43, of Chingola’s Maiteneke area had been buried alive at Sensele open pit mine as he went in search for copper ore.
This was where more than 30 miners were recently buried alive with only 12 retrieved so far.
Mweemba stated that the incident happened on Sunday around 11:00 hours adding that Joseph Kamapamga went to scavenge for copper ore at Sensele open pit mine COP A area at Debra tunnels.
It was reported that whilst looking for the mineral, the earth caved in and buried him alive.
The deceased was later retrieved, and his body taken to Nchanga North Hospital Mortuary pending further proceedings.

Mweemba assured the public that Police were doing everything possible to keep vigil on the area so that other people do not invade the area considered very vast.
Mweemba urged residents of Chingola and the Copperbelt to avoid invading the area and allow government to conclude its effort’s being made to retrieve other miners who were still trapped.
On December 1,2023 more than 30 miners were reportedly trapped at Sensele Open Pits.
So far only 12 miners have been retrieved but only Mwasha Kakoma made it while the rest were buried at Chingola Central Cemetery as the search enters day 24 since the mishap occurred.
