The body of an eight-year-old girl who drowned in the Kafue River in Kitwe after slipping, as a huge crowd gathered to witness cooler box unit being conveyed, has been recovered.
Kitwe City Council Public Relations Manager, Mwaka Nakweti, confirmed in a statement on Thursday that the search ended tragically when the Kitwe City Council Fire Brigade retrieved the child’s body at 12:56 near Twin Bridge Lodge.
“The body was found intact and had not decomposed,” Nakweti said.
The council extended its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and urged the public to prioritize safety around water bodies to avoid similar tragedies.

The girl, from Ndeke Township, reportedly drowned after slipping into the river, an incident that has brought sorrow to her community.
Zambia Monitor reported that the incident occurred on Wednesday in Kitwe, when an eight-year-old girl from Ndeke Township slipped and fell into the Kafue River.
The tragedy happened as an abnormal truck with a cooler box unit was passing nearby, creating a commotion.
The circumstances surrounding how the girl fell remain unclear, but local authorities have described the event as an unfortunate accident.
