Ugandan opposition leader, Robert Ssentamu, widely known as Bobi Wine, has been reported shot and injured by police in Kampala while attempting to march down a road, according to his political party, the National Unity Platform.

The party reported that Bobi Wine, the most prominent opponent of President Yoweri Museveni, was shot in the leg by security agents in Bulindo, Wakiso District, a northern suburb of the capital.

A post on the party’s X account alleged that security operatives had attempted to take his life.

Ugandan police, however, stated that the injury occurred when Bobi Wine stumbled while getting into his vehicle during an altercation as officers tried to prevent him and his team from marching.

Police announced on X that an investigation would be conducted to clarify the facts, stating, “He stumbled while getting into his vehicle, causing the injury, whereas Kyagulanyi and his team assert that he was shot.”

Bobi Wine responded on his X account, criticizing the police’s version of events, saying, “Sadly but not surprisingly, the Police Statement claimed that our leader Bobi Wine stumbled as he was getting into his vehicle and got injured.”

He emphasized the role of citizen journalism, adding, “They often forget that today, everyone is a journalist. We’re grateful to the vigilant citizens who captured this footage and shared it. Thank you for listening to our consistent message—many times, our cameras are our biggest weapons.”
