The police have announced that Member of Parliament (MP) for Petauke Central, Emmanuel Jay Banda, will have his criminal allegations heard in the High Court in Lusaka.

Banda has been facing charges stemming from an incident on December 14, 2015, at Mzigawa Primary School in Vubwi District, Eastern Province, where he allegedly stole property valued at K12,000.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Friday, Police Public Relations Officer, Rae Hamoonga, confirmed that following proceedings at the Chipata Magistrate Court, Banda was remanded in a correctional facility awaiting trial.

“His case will be referred to the High Court which has jurisdiction to preside over such offenses,” Hamoonga stated.

Additionally, investigations into Banda’s disappearance on May 25, 2024, are still ongoing.

Banda had claimed he was abducted on that date.

“Efforts are being made to record another formal statement from him following a letter of complaint he submitted,” Hamoonga added.

In his initial statement to the police, Banda did not mention any individuals. However, he raised allegations in his subsequent letter of complaint.

“The police will give Banda another opportunity to have his claims formally recorded as required in a criminal investigation. The objective remains to uphold justice and maintain transparency throughout the investigative process,” Hamoonga concluded.
