Banda demands official clarification on President Hichilema’s constitutional amendment remarks

Former Kasenengwa lawmaker, Sensio Banda, has urged the Ministry of Justice to provide an official clarification on President Hakainde Hichilema’s recent remarks on constitutional amendments made in Kasama, Northern Province.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday, Banda cautioned that allowing partisan figures to lead discussions on constitutional reforms could undermine the credibility and seriousness of the process.

He argued that amending the Constitution was a national agenda that required impartiality, professionalism, and commitment to the public interest.

“I am deeply concerned about the recent actions of Mark Simuwe, the UPND Media Director, who has taken it upon himself to engage with various media platforms to clarify the president’s remarks on the constitutional amendment process,” Banda said.

He warned that Simuwe’s responses to speculation, rather than waiting for an official government position, risk creating confusion and eroding public trust.

“If this trend continues, the damage may become irreparable by the time the government issues its official stance, leaving the public skeptical and less receptive,” he added.

Banda emphasized that the responsibility of explaining the President’s statements should rest with designated government officials, such as the Minister of Justice or the Chief Government Spokesperson.

“These are matters of law and national importance that demand official government communication, not interpretations from a party functionary,” he said.

President Hichilema had called on stakeholders, including civil society and the church, to support constitutional amendments before the 2026 elections to increase women’s participation in elective positions.
