Athletic Development Zambia has called for the immediate cessation of the “Heroes Marathon,” organised by City Marathon, slated to take place in Lusaka, alleging that the event is illegal.
According to a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday by Development General-Secretary, Davison Mung’ambata, the organisation said the event lacked sanction from Zambia Athletics (ZA), the governing body for athletic events in Zambia.
Mung’ambata clarified that it was mandatory for every race organiser in Zambia to seek permission and apply for inclusion on the ZA calendar for a race to be officially sanctioned.

“Zambia Athletics will not tolerate individuals who unlawfully collect cash from unsuspecting athletes and the general public for their financial gain using the Athletics Brand,” he said.
Mung’ambata urged the Zambia Police and the Lusaka City Council to enforce the law and assist ZA in halting the Marathon from taking place.
He also appealed to the media to refrain from promoting the event.
“We advise the general public to be cautious of individuals or organisations that unlawfully stage road races without permission from ZA and to abstain from participating in such events,” he concluded.
