Artisanal and Small-Scale Miners (ASM) are crucial to ensuring Zambia benefits fully from the growing demand for critical minerals driven by the rise of Electric Vehicles (EVs), says the Federation of Small-Scale Mining Association of Zambia.

In a phone interview on Monday with Zambia Monitor, Federation president, Joseph Mwansa, stated the importance of ASM in Zambia’s economy, calling for a collective effort to achieve sustainable mining.

He stressed that small-scale mining provided livelihoods to thousands of families and played a growing role in mineral production.

“The road to sustainable mining cannot be traveled alone. It requires the combined efforts of government bodies, miners, global experts, and community leaders,” Mwansa said.

“ASM is a vital part of our economy, contributing significantly to our mineral output.”

However, Mwansa acknowledged challenges facing ASM, including safety risks, environmental concerns, and limited access to global markets.

He highlighted the technical and financial support provided by international partners to help artisanal miners adopt safer and more efficient mining practices.

“This exchange of knowledge will enable small-scale miners to access global markets, benefiting not only their livelihoods but also contributing to the growth of Zambia’s mining sector,” Mwansa noted.
