All tobacco grown in Zambia are exclusively for export, with the industry emphasizing its commitment to responsible trade practices, according to the Tobacco Association of Zambia (TAZ).
TAZ Executive Director, Phonto Mumbi, stated that the sector adheres to strict global regulations and supports measures under the Anti-Illicit Trade in Tobacco Protocol, overseen by the Ministry of Trade and Industry.
Speaking in Lusaka during a joint press conference by members of the Zambia Private Sector Alliance (ZPSA) on the 2025 Tobacco Control Bill (TCB), Mumbi called for inclusive dialogue among stakeholders to ensure a balanced regulatory approach.
“The industry is already subject to strict global regulations, with its members fully compliant with existing laws,” he said.
Mumbi highlighted the tobacco sector’s economic significance, involving approximately 38,000 farmers.
He also noted its contributions to community development, including investments in roads, schools, and healthcare facilities.
Additionally, he advocated for a regulated system to prevent the importation of low-cost cigarettes, warning that such products could undermine local efforts and public health laws.
