The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Director- General, Thom Shamakamba, has reportedly resigned following public outcry over the state of corruption in the country.

President Hakainde Hichilema accepted Shamakamba’s resignation from his office.

Clayson Hamasaka, Chief Communications Specialist at State House, confirmed Shamakamba’s resignation in a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday.

“President Hakainde Hichilema has accepted the resignation of Mr. Thom Trevor Shamakamba from his office as Director-General of the Anti-Corruption Commission,” Hamasaka said.

He added that the President thanked Shamakamba for his service to the government and wished him well in his future endeavors.

Recently, Dr. Obrien Kaaba, an ACC Board Member and UNZA Lecturer, exposed deep-seated looting of the Treasury involving State Chambers and allegedly facilitated by the ACC.

Kaaba stated, “State Chambers are at the forefront of looting the Treasury and are strong allies of corruption.”

Kaaba claimed that the ACC had been captured and unable to fight corruption in its current state. “Judges are identified outside Lusaka to sign off corrupt settlements. The ACC DG threatened to sort me out and finish me for exposing corruption,” Kaaba stated.

He said the strong anti-corruption fight Hichilema launched when he ascended to office had ebbed off and lost traction.

Kaaba alleged that the institutions charged with fighting corruption were merely massaging, bandaging and covering up corruption.

Alliance for Community Action Executive Director, Laura Miti, supported Kaaba’s observations and called for the sanitization of the ACC.

Miti urged the President to act on reports of Treasury looting involving state chambers with the support of the ACC.

Edgar Lungu-led Patriotic Front Chairperson for Information and Publicity, Emmanuel Mwamba, and other stakeholders also weighed in on the revelations, supporting Kaaba’s call for action.
