A newly formed Teachers Union in Zambia is calling for the establishment of a systematic approach to resolve outstanding issues that have negatively impacted educators across the country.
Thomas Sendoi, president of the Educators’ Trade Union of Zambia, emphasized the need to compile a comprehensive account of teachers’ challenges, creating a detailed framework to guide government efforts in addressing these concerns effectively.
Speaking at the launch of the union at Long Acres Lodge in Lusaka on Thursday, Sendoi stressed the importance of roundtable engagements where practical and binding resolutions could be reached to tackle the challenges facing teachers.
“The issues facing educators are complex and multifaceted, and our approach must be equally comprehensive,” Sendoi explained.
He said: “We are committed to engaging in dialogue with government officials and stakeholders to ensure that every voice is heard and considered.”

The union’s goal, he said, is to foster an environment where constructive solutions can be developed to improve the lives of teachers and their students.
Key issues that Sendoi identified as urgent included teacher upgrades, substantive confirmations, and improvements to work-related benefits such as leave travel allowances and settling-in allowances.
He called for these matters to be addressed in a way that reflects the realities teachers face on the ground.
“We will not allow these critical conditions to remain just words on paper. We are ready to present clear, researched alternatives that the government can implement to honor its commitments,” Sendoi added.
