In the dramatic turn of the murder trial involving Jane Lusengo, accused of killing her husband, the late Zambia Air Force commander, Lieutenant General Ronald Shikapwasha, deep-seated issues of infidelity within their 46-year marriage has come to light.
Vanessa Shikapwasha, one of the children born outside of wedlock, confessed that her father, also a Reverend, had fathered more than five children outside of his marriage.
Vanessa testified that her father, in his final moments, accused Lusengo, her stepmother, of causing his demise with the words: “Jane, your infidelity has caused my death.”
However, during cross-examination, revelations emerged about the late General’s own infidelity.
Vanessa disclosed that the couple frequently clashed, with her father even expelling Lusengo from the house on two occasions, only to reconcile later.
Born in 1986 out of wedlock to Doreen Kabinga, Vanessa lived with her mother until she was 16, then moved in with her father after her mother’s passing, spending only a few months there before marriage.
Asked about other illegitimate children, she mentioned five by name and suggested there might be more.
Defence lawyer Gilbert Pindani questioned Vanessa about her father’s alleged statement to the Maina Soko Military Hospital commandant, Levy Muchemwa, claiming he had shot himself, to which she responded she was unaware.
Judge Conceptor Chinyanwa Zulu adjourned the trial until May 21.
Lusengo stands accused of murdering her husband, purportedly by shooting him with his double-barrel gun on January 14th of this year, at their Ibex Hill matrimonial home.
