The initiative, launched in collaboration with Mastercard, was announced on Wednesday.

The partnership is expected to empower Airtel’s mobile users across 14 African countries, including Zambia, by reportedly providing them with access to Mastercard’s global merchant network.

The new solution claims to enhance the safety and security of international transactions for Airtel Money customers.

Chief Executive Officer, Ian Ferrao, commented on the launch: “At Airtel, we are continuously innovating to enhance the customer experience. By integrating Mastercard’s secure virtual payment solution into Airtel Money, we are simplifying international payments and making them more accessible for our customers. This collaboration reportedly allows us to offer a seamless global e-commerce experience.”

Mastercard Middle East and Africa’s Senior Vice President for Digital Partnerships, Muhammad Nana, highlighted the impact of the partnership: “Our digital partnerships strategy focuses on enabling digital transformation for our partners, providing customers with access to a seamless global payment ecosystem. With over 150 million Airtel Africa consumers reportedly now connected to the global digital economy, we are helping more consumers tap into the benefits of e-commerce.”
