Change Mindset Zambia Executive Director, Geoffrey Musonda, says there is need for systematic approach as the government bans the selling of alcohol in residential areas.

Musonda said in an interview on Monday in Kitwe that there was need to consider economic factors before banning the selling of alcoholic beverages in residential areas.

“The economy is not good at the moment, in as much as the government wants sanity in the way people do business, there is need to think of how they will survive,” he said.

Grary Nkombo, the Local Government and Rural Development Minister, is said to have directed councils to close all places found selling alcohol in residential places .

But the change advocate  said  although the directive was well intended, the economic factors needed to be considered.

He said most households were barely surviving due to the high cost of living, hence the need for those charged with the responsibility of enforcing the Minister’s ‘word of command’ to consider alternatives.

Musonda said households were reportedly resorting to selling  alcoholic beverages because of the harsh economic realities prevailing in the country.

He recalled that just recently, the council removed mobile money booths in the streets of Kitwe but the local authority has promised to find alternative trading places.

“The same way the council wants to relocate booth to  other places should be the same way they should look for alternative places for shebeens,” Musonda said.
