ActionAid tasks govt to fix issues hampering free education policy

ActionAid Zambia has urged the Zambian government to urgently address the challenges manifested during the implementation of free education policy.

Actionaid interim country director Musonda Kabinga said the introduction of free education for early childhood education (ECE), primary and secondary schools was commendable.

He said there was need for adequate legal and policy framework in the education Act to support the pronouncement of the free education policy.

Musonda said this during submissions on the free education policy in Zambia to the parliamentary committee on education in the capital, Lusaka on Wednesday.

He said the current education Act wasn’t adequately addressing the free education policy.

The parliamentary committee was chaired by Itezhi-Tezhi Member of Parliament (MP) Twaambo Mutinta.

Actionaid submitted numerous challenges that have arisen from the implementation of the Free education Policy such the high pupil teacher ratio, learner desk ratio, limited classroom space, reduced contact time needed urgent attention.

They submitted that in most schools the infrastructure was poor while teachers remained demotivated while school supplies from the government such as stationery were not tallying with the enrollment levels.

Actionaid has since made short and long-term recommendations to the government through parliament on how the free education.
