ABSA Bank supervisor and loans officer, James Chisanga, has died after collapsing during the ABSA Racing Marathon in Lusaka on Saturday.
ABSA Bank Chief Executive Officer, Minizinga Melu, confirmed the tragic news, describing Chisanga as a dedicated employee who had worked late the previous day to clear pending loans.
“At the Bank, we promote healthy living, and we are proud of our staff’s enthusiastic participation in various wellness activities, including the marathon,” Melu stated. She added that Chisanga had shown up for the marathon on Saturday before collapsing and being rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Melu praised Chisanga’s commitment, noting that while many employees planned to run their marathon next week, he had participated on Saturday. “He did an incredible job,” she noted, describing him as a determined individual and a cherished member of the ABSA family.
“Losing a member of staff is one of the most tragic issues any leader will have to deal with. I am personally devastated by this loss,” Melu added.
An earlier statement from the bank emphasized that all recommended safety measures, including medical facilities along the route, were in place during the event.
“While we await a full report on the incident and cause of death, the safety and well-being of all our participants remains a top priority,” the statement read.
ABSA Bank had pledged full support to Chisanga’s family and colleagues during this difficult time.
“May his soul rest in peace,” the statement concluded.
