A total of 2,600 assorted drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks have been seized by the Mambwe Town Council in Eastern Province
This occurred during the routine inspections conducted in shops located in Masumba and Airport areas on Wednesday.
According to Council Public Relations Officer, Grace Lungu, the seized drinks had all passed their best before dates.

She said this was done in accordance with the Public Health Act Cap. 295 of the laws of Zambia and Food Safety Act of 2019 .
“The seized items are, 19 bottles of 330mls of Castle Lite, 22 bottles of Budweiser, 1,728 bottles of 500mls Sprite Soft drinks and a total of 831 Coca-Cola ( less sugar) 1 liters each,” she said.
Lungu advised members of the public to always check for bottle labeling when buying drinks or any other food stuff.
She said it was also important for them to know that although drinks that have already passed it’s best before date may not be expired, the quality was compromised and still unfit for consumption.
She, however, said shop owners should also be reminded that it was their duty to ensure that all goods stocked in their shelves meet the required standards and safe for human consumption at all cost.
“The Council will not hesitate to seize products that may be deemed hazardous to the public and ensure that offenders are prosecuted,” she said.
