The Lusaka Magistrates’ Court has sentenced Lumezi Member of Parliament, Munir Zulu, to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour after finding him guilty of criminal libel.

Zulu was convicted for making defamatory statements against Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane, Infrastructure Minister Charles Milupi, and engineer Mulchand Kuntwala.

The charges stemmed from Zulu’s public allegations that Musokotwane and Milupi each received US$250,000 via bank transfer from a company he claimed to be familiar with.

He further accused Kuntwala of transferring US$150,000 to Milupi just two days before the latter’s appointment as Board Chairperson of the Roads Development Agency.

The state, confident in the strength of its evidence, chose not to file additional submissions, relying solely on the record presented during the trial.

Emotions ran high outside the courtroom as Zulu’s wife broke down in tears following the sentencing of her husband.
