Minister of Energy, Makozo Chikote, has instructed ZESCO Limited to strictly adhere to the agreed seven-hour electricity load management schedule to enhance predictability and reduce disruptions for households, businesses, and essential services nationwide.
The directive was issued during a high-level meeting in Lusaka, attended by ZESCO’s entire management team, ZESCO Board Chairperson Vickson N’cube, Managing Director Justin Loongo, the Director General of the Energy Regulation Board (ERB), and officials from the Rural Electrification Authority (REA).
Newly appointed Permanent Secretary for Electricity, Arnold Simwaba, also participated.
“We have listened to the public’s concerns about inconsistencies in the load management schedule. ZESCO must ensure strict compliance and improve communication with consumers regarding any necessary adjustments,” Chikote said.
He warned that poor service delivery would not be tolerated and stressed the need for efficiency, transparency, and accountability in managing the country’s energy challenges.
Chikote further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to long-term energy solutions, including increased investment in alternative energy sources and infrastructure development.
He cautioned against political interference, urging that all load management decisions be guided by technical expertise and national interest.
“ZESCO management must be proactive in decision-making to address the country’s energy needs effectively,” he added.
The Minister also directed ZESCO to expedite efforts to add 1,000MW of power to the national grid by the end of the year, a target set by President Hakainde Hichilema.
He emphasized the importance of boosting local power generation while continuing electricity imports from regional partners as a temporary measure.
“Achieving this target is crucial to improving energy security and supporting Zambia’s growing economy,” Chikote stressed.

Additionally, the Minister cautioned ZESCO against power cuts at key security institutions, highlighting the need to maintain uninterrupted electricity for critical public safety facilities.
To further expedite electricity provision, Chikote announced plans to meet with independent power producers (IPPs) to explore ways of fast-tracking power generation projects and achieving the 1,000MW target.
ZESCO Board Chairperson N’cube and Managing Director, Loongo assured the Minister of their commitment to adhering to the directive, improving public communication, and accelerating power generation projects.
“All new projects will be delivered on time, aligning with ZESCO’s goal to enhance electricity generation and distribution efficiency,” they assured.
