The Patriotic Front (PF), led by former President Edgar Lungu, has warned its Members of Parliament against supporting the ongoing constitutional amendment process, threatening to campaign against those who do so in the 2026 elections.
Faction leader of the opposition in parliament, Brian Mundubile, said the PF rejected the approach taken by President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration, arguing that it lacked a clear roadmap and adequate stakeholder consultations.
Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka on Friday, Mundubile accused the government of bypassing critical engagement stages and instead rushing to draft amendments without building trust among key stakeholders.
“We will de-campaign any MP who supports this shrouded process. We will work with the Church and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to ensure they lose their seats,” he warned.
Mundubile advised President Hichilema to postpone any constitutional amendments until after the 2026 general elections, allowing for wider consultation and a more transparent process.
He also expressed concern over reports that the amendments could include the reintroduction of deputy ministers, the removal of the 50 percent plus one vote requirement for presidential elections, and an increase in the presidential term limit.
“If the government continues down this path, it will face an uphill battle in 2026. Zambians want economic solutions, not rushed constitutional changes,” Mundubile cautioned.
