Vice President, Mutale Nalumango has commended Standard Chartered Bank’s Women in Tech (WiT) initiative, which will receive an additional US$0.5 million to empower women entrepreneurs.
This funding is reportedly part of a larger K14.4 million investment over the next three years.
Nalumango made the remarks when Standard Chartered executives paid a courtesy call on her at her office in Lusaka.
She praised the bank’s commitment to using technology to boost women’s economic opportunities and drive business growth.
“The government has placed women’s empowerment as a top priority, and this initiative is a commendable contribution to that agenda,” Nalumango said.
The Women in Tech Accelerator, part of the bank’s global youth economic empowerment programme, Futuremakers, helps women-led start-ups in Zambia with essential skills, funding, and networking.
Since its launch in 2020, the programme is said to have supported 21 female entrepreneurs, providing each with US$10,000 in seed funding.
Sonny Zulu, Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered Bank Zambia, reaffirmed the bank’s dedication to fostering female entrepreneurship.
“This new investment underscores our commitment to elevating the participation of women and small businesses in Zambia’s economy,” he said.
Zulu added that the initiative aligns with national efforts to empower women entrepreneurs, noting that the new investment comes at the perfect time during Women’s Month.
