Zambia and Japan have officially signed a US$1.17 million grant to procure critical mining equipment for the Geological Survey Department under the Ministry of Mines and Mineral Development.
The grant would enable the Ministry to acquire state-of-the-art equipment, enhancing the department’s capabilities and improving the accuracy and efficiency of geological surveys.
Finance and National Planning Minister, Situmbeko Musokotwane, expressed optimism that the new equipment would attract further investment into Zambia’s mining sector.
Musokotwane, speaking at the signing ceremony in Lusaka on Thursday, highlighted that new investments would lead to job creation and support industries related to value addition.
“This support comes at a critical time as Zambia intensifies efforts to revitalise its mining sector and fully utilise its mineral resources for the benefit of all Zambians,” he said.
He noted that Zambia’s mining sector was crucial to the country’s economy, contributing significantly to employment, foreign exchange earnings, and overall economic growth.
The Geological Survey Department plays a vital role in this by providing essential geological data to guide exploration, investment, and sustainable resource management.
Musokotwane emphasized that modern equipment was necessary for the department to realise its full potential.
