The Malawian government has expressed gratitude to President Hakainde Hichilema and the people of Zambia for their continued support in times of crisis.
Malawian High Commissioner to Zambia, Margaret Kamoto, acknowledged Zambia’s critical assistance during Cyclone Freddy in March 2023, which included search and rescue operations.
She made these remarks during a courtesy call on Lusaka Province Minister, Sheal Mulyata, at her office in Lusaka on Thursday morning.
Kamoto also recalled Zambia’s role in search and rescue efforts following the tragic plane crash that claimed the life of Malawi’s Vice President, Saulos Chilima, in June 2024.
“Malawi values its strong brotherly ties with Zambia, and we do not take this relationship for granted,” she said.
“I want to thank President Hakainde Hichilema through you, Minister, for the assistance rendered to Malawi during Cyclone Freddy. Zambia provided search and rescue support. Even when our Vice President perished in the plane crash, Zambia assisted us, and we remain grateful,” Kamoto added.

In response, Lusaka Province Minister Sheal Mulyata emphasized the deep-rooted cooperation between Zambia and Malawi since 1964, highlighting the shared history, culture, and familial ties between the two nations.
“Zambia and Malawi are one family—we share borders, tribes, and a spirit of brotherhood,” she said.
Mulyata also commended Malawians for upholding the values of discipline and hard work championed by Malawi’s founding President, Kamuzu Banda.
She further extended Zambia’s sympathies for the lives lost during Cyclone Freddy and the tragic passing of Vice President Chilima.
