The Zambia Police Service says it has made a major breakthrough in the case of a tanker truck attack along the Chirundu-Kafue Road on March 2, 2025.

In a statement on Tuesday, Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, revealed that sustained investigations, supported by technical assistance from the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA), led to the arrest of Joshua Mwindilila, 41, in Chikangabwe West, Mumbwa District on March 8, 2025.

“The suspect has been identified as one of the buyers of stolen items linked to the Chirundu incident,” Hamoonga stated.

He disclosed that Mwindilila had repeatedly attempted to evade capture, hiding in Simwambwa Hills near Malengo in Chirundu and later at Turnpike in Kafue District.

Police officers claimed they had to trek 30 kilometers through difficult terrain to reach and arrest him, as there was no access road in the area.

The case was initially reported by John Samakayi, 55, of Riverside, Chingola, who was driving a Shacman tanker truck when he was attacked by criminals who stole property worth K6,850.

Further investigations led to the arrest of a second suspect, Justin Muchala, on March 9, 2025, around 11:00 hours.

Muchala was found hiding in the hills of Kafue Gorge, where he had constructed a makeshift shelter.

“Acting on intelligence, police rushed to the location and apprehended the suspect, who is now in custody for further investigations,” Hamoonga said.

He warned criminals targeting truckers along the Kafue-Chirundu Road and other highways that police would not relent until all perpetrators were arrested and brought to justice.

“We remain committed to ensuring the safety of all road users and urge the public to remain vigilant, reporting any suspicious activities to the nearest police station,” he added.
