The Lusaka High Court has ordered Jervis Zimba to immediately vacate his position as President of the Zambia National Farmers’ Union (ZNFU), dealing a major blow to his leadership.
In the same ruling, the court canceled a highly anticipated special council meeting set for Thursday, deepening the organization’s leadership crisis.
Judge Gaudentia Salasini issued the interim injunction on March 11, 2025, in favor of Joseph Mungandi, ZNFU’s immediate past vice president, who is challenging Zimba’s extended stay in office. An inter-party hearing is scheduled for March 26, 2025.
The ruling effectively strips Zimba of all presidential powers.
Mungandi argues that Zimba has overstayed his tenure, violating the ZNFU constitution, which limits a president to two three-year terms.
According to him, Zimba’s term should have ended in 2024.
However, Zimba’s supporters claim that COVID-19 disruptions justified his continued stay until 2025.
