Cabinet at the fifth meeting held on March 10, 2025 approved a number of bills, among them targeted at enhancing Zambia’s cross-border transactions and trade processes.

Approving the bill called Management and Trade Facilitation Act, No. 12 of 2018, had become necessary as the previous one did not recognise appropriate authorities that should operate at a port of entry for the purpose of facilitating the import and export of goods.

Additionally, the Act did not ease trade for persons involved in trade by the use of modern technologies in trade facilitation.

This is according to the Information and Media and Chief government spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa, when announcing the resolutions.

“Cabinet has observed that the Border Management and Trade Facilitation Act, No. 12 of 2018, is inadequate in dealing with trade requirements which could severely impact trade amongst the Republic and other countries.

“Further, the Act does not recognise appropriate authorities that should operate at a port of entry for the purpose of facilitating the import and export of goods. Therefore, it has become necessary to introduce this Bill, so as to enhance Zambia’s cross-border transactions and trade processes,” Mweetwa said.
