EFF rejects Hichilema’s claim of public support for constitutional amendments

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has dismissed President Hakainde Hichilema’s assertion that Zambians have agreed to the proposed constitutional amendments.

EFF president, Kasonde Mwenda, accused the UPND government of attempting to abolish the current majoritarian system and replace it with a Proportional Representation (PR) model.

In a statement issued on Monday, Mwenda said Zambians had not consented to any amendments that would remove presidential elections, as President Hichilema claimed.

He condemned what he described as a blatant manipulation of the people’s will by the ruling party.

“It is increasingly clear that President Hichilema and the UPND, in their desperation to hold onto power, are attempting to force through a dangerous and undemocratic constitutional amendment ahead of the 2026 general elections,” Mwenda said.

He alleged that under the proposed system, Zambians would no longer directly elect their president. Instead, political parties would appoint the head of state based on their share of votes.

“This is not what the people of Zambia have agreed to, nor is it what they deserve,” he said, recalling that the 2016 constitutional amendments reaffirmed the majoritarian system and the 50+1 electoral threshold.

Mwenda described the proposal as a direct assault on democracy, accusing the UPND of panicking over an impending defeat in 2026.

“Their failed promises of economic prosperity have led to record-high inflation, a devalued currency at K29 to US$1, skyrocketing fuel prices, and a crushing cost of living,” he stated.

He accused the ruling party of resorting to “underhanded methods” to maintain power, warning that Zambians would reject any attempt to manipulate the electoral system.
