Standards authority warns of safety risks from non-compliant electrical products

The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) has raised concerns over the widespread presence of non-compliant electrical products on the market, warning that items such as adaptors, sockets, and extension cables pose serious safety risks.

ZCSA Executive Director, Gerald Chizinga, said market surveillance inspections had revealed that these products were among the most non-compliant, leading to their seizure and removal from the market to protect public safety.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting with suppliers of electrical products in Lusaka on Tuesday, held at Asmara Hotel, Chizinga highlighted the risks associated with substandard electrical items, including personal injury, electric shock, fires, and property damage.

“To address this challenge, the agency has intensified public education, stakeholder engagement, and enforcement actions in this product category,” Chizinga said.

He emphasized that ZCSA cannot tackle the issue alone, calling on suppliers to take responsibility and ensure that only compliant products are placed on the market, as required by law.

“The agency will use a two-pronged approach, strengthening both public awareness and enforcement measures nationwide to eliminate these unsafe products,” he stated.

Chizinga urged suppliers and traders of electrical products to comply with compulsory standards, adding that collaboration between stakeholders is key to protecting consumers and the environment.

“We also welcome suggestions on how we can work together to safeguard the market from unsafe products,” he said.

He called on the public, suppliers, importers, manufacturers, and other stakeholders to support ZCSA’s efforts in protecting public safety from the dangers of non-compliant electrical products.
