North-Western Council of Chiefs Chairperson, Chief Mumena, has called for 15 percent of mining tax revenues collected in the region to be allocated to local development.
Speaking at a press briefing at Floriana Lodge on Saturday, Chief Mumena emphasized that every province should receive a share of royalty taxes from the investments it hosts.
He argued that such a move would help provinces achieve the development they deserve, expressing concern that North-Western Province, despite being a major contributor to the National Treasury, had only been promised projects under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

“The PPP projects are only on paper. The situation is not favorable for the people of North-Western Province,” Chief Mumena said.
He urged the government to expedite the construction of a public university and a provincial airport, both of which were promised by President Hakainde Hichilema.
The Council also called for the actualization of the University Teaching Hospitals project, whose groundbreaking ceremony was conducted in 2022 by Vice President Mutale Nalumango.
North-Western Province currently contributes about 70 percent of Zambia’s annual copper output and is home to three of the country’s five largest copper mines in Zambia.
