Zulu’s fate in criminal libel case to be decided April 7

Controversial politician, Munir Zulu, will learn his fate on April 7, 2025, after failing to present additional witnesses in his alleged criminal libel case involving Finance Minister, Situmbeko Musokotwane, Infrastructure Minister Charles Milupi, and Engineer Mulchan Kuntwala.

Chief Resident Magistrate Davies Chibwili closed Zulu’s defense on Friday after granting multiple adjournments that ultimately produced no further witnesses.

The case, which dates back to 2023, has now been set for judgment.

During the latest court session, Zulu’s defense team sought another adjournment, citing the need for more time to present two remaining witnesses.

However, Magistrate Chibwili denied the request, ruling that the accused had been given sufficient opportunities to present his case.

“I have closely followed the conduct of the defense since the accused was put on trial,” Magistrate Chibwili said. “I have granted multiple adjournments in the interest of justice, but I find no merit in this latest application. The defense must either present witnesses or close their case.”

The court then ordered the defense to proceed with its submissions. While the defense requested 21 days to prepare, it was granted 14 days instead.

Zulu is accused of making defamatory claims that Musokotwane and Milupi each received $250,000 via bank transfer from a company he is familiar with.

He further alleged that Kuntwala transferred US$150,000 to Milupi just two days before his appointment as Board Chairperson of the Roads Development Agency.

The state, having presented its case, opted not to file additional submissions, stating it was satisfied with the evidence already on record.
