A case involving a Mozambican and a Zambian, accused of being hired witch doctors to use sorcery against President Hakainde Hichilema, took an unexpected turn when state witnesses failed to appear in court.

The absence of the witnesses before the Lusaka Magistrate’s Court left spectators disappointed, as many were eager to hear more details about the bizarre case.

Magistrate Fines Mayambu issued a warning to the prosecution, directing them to ensure all witnesses are present at the next hearing.

The State had requested an adjournment, citing the unavailability of witnesses.

The accused, Jasten Mabulesse Candude, a Mozambican national, and Leonard Phiri from Zambia’s Sinda District, face charges under the Witchcraft Act.

They are accused of professing knowledge of witchcraft, contrary to Section 5 of Chapter 90 of the Laws of Zambia, and possessing charms, violating Section 11(2) of the same Act.

The alleged offenses are said to have occurred between November 22 and November 23, 2024.

The duo were reportedly hired by fugitive former Petauke Member of Parliamen, Emmanuel Jay Banda, through his younger brother Nelson Banda, for K43 million to harm the President using dark magic.
