Finance and National Planning Minister, Situmbeko Musokotwane, has assured the opposition that the 2022 census data was credible, reliable, and of high quality.

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, Musokotwane urged opposition leaders to remain calm, dismissing concerns over the Zambia Statistics Agency (ZamStats) report.

“My message is very simple—relax, relax… because the data collected is credible, reliable, and of high quality. Take time to study the document, which is available in both hard and soft copies,” he said.

He was responding to Kantanshi Member of Parliament Anthony Mumba, who sought clarity on the government’s position following opposition threats of civil disobedience if issues surrounding the report were not addressed.

Musokotwane emphasized that the Ministry of Finance and National Planning had conducted extensive consultations with stakeholders and stood by the accuracy of the report.

His remarks followed recent statements by Civil Service Commission Chairperson Choolwe Beyani, who questioned the report’s credibility.

Beyani, who also serves as UPND director for research, claimed the census was procedurally flawed, arguing that 15 wards in Southern Province had more registered voters than the population figures reflected in the report.
